Brouemont and the Tabby's

History

The ancestors of Brouemont

The beginning

Let’s go back to 1848 and change the name of Brouemont’s to Martin’s Tavern. Here is where we start the history of what we would call a monument and legend of the main street, in Bedford city.

The exact date of the construction of the first hotel was not established anywhere. Meanwhile, some sources we have found tell that some activity happened in 1848. Our first document establishing the place and time tell us that Mr. Hidreth Trueman was the constructor of the hotel who handed it on to Mr. Patrick Martin in 1858 after going bankrupt.

The vocation

The place was mainly used, like the name says, as a hotel for people who were coming to the region and for the doctors who wanted to visit their patients from their room and office inside the hotel.

In 1873 a terrible fire destroyed the entire hotel and part of the buildings on the main street.

The hotel was reconstructed and already the popularity of the place was bringing people from all over the Eastern Townships. A reception room had been build at the same time.

Later on, a succession of owners took management of the hotel Bedford House.

The war

The war of 1914–18 brought multiple restrictions and the hotel was not exempt from this. One of the restrictions was: for the cause of war support and public morality, a “prohibition” law was established to suspend alcohol permits.

Another fire occurred in 1919 on the third floor and the hotel had considerable damage.

A transaction dated from 1921 tells us that the hotel was sold for the amount of $9000 to Mr. l’Houmeaux

The Dunnigan's establish

After passing through 9 owners between 1919 and 1943, a member of the Dunnigan family acquired the hotel in 1943 and since that time the hotel became exclusive to the Dunnigan hierarchy. The first, Mr. John Dunnigan, renamed the hotel to Hotel Maurice after his wife's family name Georgette Maurice.

Then Mr. Guy Dunnigan bought the place and built a reception room on the south side with the name “the green house”. The basement was used for storing cars in the winter.

Another fire ignited in 1977 and completely burned the hotel. Mr. Guy Dunnigan decided to reconstruct the hotel and changed the name to Bina’s bar. The business since then changed for a tavern/bar with animation and big bands.

Patrick Dunnigan and Diane Moreau took ownership after the death of Patrick’s father, Mr. Guy Dunnigan on May 3rd 1997. Since then the name changed again to Tabby’s.

Many new things have been added like the micro-brewery, terrace, pub menu and much more.

The last fire

The popularity of the establishment grow up really fast and soon, jealousy became from other Bar's and restaurant in the area.

In 2002, a second criminal hand, burned the place, and destroyed a legend in Bedford. Many peoples was devastated from this and still today, want to find the persons behind this fire. The place, left in the middle of the main street in Bedford, a "architectural hole" that you can still see today.

The Brouemont

After the incident, the owners took a year break to settle down and think what they should do.
They decieded that nobody will stop them do what they love to do, get peoples and custommers to have fun in a nice friendly atmosphere.

They moved to Bromont, baught old restaurant and made major renovation. And you guess it, the reputation of Tabby's, moved to Brouemont and became, again, the best place for fun, eat and sometimes, dance.

Briefly, we passed from over 150 years of history. From Martin’s Tavern to Brouemont from the most popular hotel in the Bedford to the always popular micro-brewery/pub/restaurant in Bromont. The misfortune and elements did not take over 67 Main Street and it is still the place to stop for a good beer, eat or to relax on our terrace and participate to our activities, in Bromont. Brouemont keeps the tradition and always welcomes you to a friendly and fun ambiance.
